I’ve+lived+in+Petawawa+long+enough+to+see+the+same+faces+at+the+grocery+store,+the+post+office,+and+—+yes+—+the+hourly+motel+parking+lot.+This+town+runs+on+mutual+surveillance.+Not+in+a+creepy+Orwellian+way.+Just+in+a+“Debbie+from+the+curling+club+saw+your+truck+outside+Clancy’s”+way.

What+about+actual+cameras?+I’ve+inspected+a+few+rooms+(research,+not…+you+know).+The+Petawawa+River+Inn+has+a+visible+camera+in+the+lobby+but+none+in+hallways.+Clancy’s+has+one+ancient+dome+camera+pointing+at+the+parking+lot+—+probably+doesn’t+even+work.+Algonquin+Lodge+has+modern+cameras+but+only+at+the+entrance+and+the+office.+No+hidden+cams+in+rooms,+as+far+as+I+could+tell.+But+I’m+not+a+bug-sweeper.+There’s+always+a+risk.

My+advice?+Don’t+use+a+credit+card.+Pay+cash.+Park+around+the+corner+if+you’re+paranoid.+And+for+god’s+sake,+don’t+post+anything+on+social+media+before+or+after.+I’ve+seen+people+lose+jobs+over+less.

One+more+thing:+the+gossip+network+is+gendered.+Women+get+judged+harder.+A+guy+seen+leaving+an+hourly+hotel?+“Oh,+he’s+single,+whatever.”+A+woman?+“Did+you+hear+about…”+It’s+not+fair.+It’s+just+how+it+is.+So+if+you’re+a+woman+using+these+spaces,+take+extra+precautions.+Maybe+bring+a+friend+to+the+parking+lot.+Or+use+the+yurt+option.

Short answer: Stigma, licensing fears, and pressure from the military base. CFB Petawawa doesn’t want its personnel using hourly hotels — it looks bad — so they unofficially pressure local businesses to keep “short stay” arrangements off the books.
I’ve confirmed this with three sources: a former motel manager, a retired base officer, and a town council member who asked not to be named. The base’s military police don’t have jurisdiction over civilian hotels, but they can make life difficult. Inspections. Noise complaints. “Suggestions” to the town’s business licensing department. It’s all soft power. But it works.
That’s why you won’t see “Hourly Rates” on a sign. Instead, you get code words: “Day Use,” “Short Stay,” or just a nod from the clerk. It’s a performance of ignorance. Everyone knows what’s happening. No one says it out loud.
Will that change? I doubt it. Not unless Canada decriminalizes the purchase of sexual services — which isn’t happening under the current federal government. So the hourly hotel economy will stay underground. Messy. Imperfect. But functional.
And honestly? That’s fine. Some things don’t need to be on Google Maps.
They’re a necessary evil. Or a necessary good, depending on your perspective. They provide privacy, safety (relative to a car or a park bench), and a weird kind of dignity for people who just want to connect without the whole town knowing. Are they glamorous? No. Are they clean? Sometimes. Do they solve a real problem? Absolutely.
If you’re using one, be smart. Cash only. Tell a friend. Check the locks. And if you see me at the front desk — no, you didn’t.
